Western New York

The Western New York region is made up of five counties—Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara—each with its own unique economic strengths and challenges. Through the diverse array of local industries, including heavy and light manufacturing, technology, agriculture and service-oriented private sector companies as well as tourism, the region is creating opportunities for economic growth, expansion and retention.

The city of Buffalo, the largest metropolitan area in the region, is in the center of the major Northeastern Trade Corridor and one of the key eastern border crossing locations. As such, international trade drives a significant share of the regional economy. Buffalo is also increasingly recognized as a center for bioinformatics and human genome research, largely due to the research at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus consortium, which ties together industry, research and higher education.

The City of Niagara Falls continues to embrace a tourism-based economy. As one of the nation's top 10 tourism destinations, Niagara Falls receives nearly 10 million visitors annually. Tourism opportunities, including wineries, parks and cultural and historic sites, also extend beyond Niagara County along the Lake Erie shoreline and into western New York's rural southern counties of Allegany, Cattauraugus and Chautauqua. Drawing tourists from near and far, Allegany State Park and Lake Chautauqua are great for year –round outdoor activities.

The industrial cities of Olean and Jamestown, as well as the many historical village and hamlet centers anchor the Southern Tier of western New York, a region rich in natural resources and community assets. With a strong industrial, manufacturing and agricultural heritage, and an improving transportation infrastructure, including the Interstate-86 corridor and short line rail, these communities are a vital asset to the regional economy. Increased focus on leveraging community assets and connecting businesses will bolster the economy of the region by easing access to markets and providing ample opportunities for growth and development.

Western New York boasts an excellent quality of life, with the distinct advantages of both city, suburban and rural living. The recreational opportunities and majestic scenery of our counties are boundless. It also has an affordable housing market, as well as great public and private schools and universities. The Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area was rated by Forbes in 2010 as one of the 10 best places to raise a family in America.
