The Zoological Society of Buffalo is requesting $2 million ($400,000 from State Parks; $1.6 million from ESDC or other sources) to assist in the funding of a $14.4 million Arctic exhibit at the Buffalo Zoo. The current polar bear exhibit has suffered from 70+ years of neglect and does not meet the standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which accredits zoos. Unless the Buffalo Zoo builds a new exhibit in the next few years, the polar bears will be permanently placed at another facility. Loss of one of its most popular species would be devastating to the Buffalo Zoo's attendance and long-term financial stability. Construction of Arctic Edge will secure the Zoo's place as the most popular cultural destination in Erie County. In addition, the interpretive graphics and interactive exhibits will educate hundreds of thousands of Western New Yorkers about climate change and ways they can act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
