Planning

Fort Ticonderoga is a private, non-profit, National Historic Landmark open to the public since 1909. The stabilization and preservation of the walls of the Fort has been an ongoing project, since it was built by the French in 1755. In particular, water infiltration and the winter freeze thaw cycle have caused damage to the walls. In recent years, sections of the walls have been successfully repaired using modern masonry and drainage techniques. We are now seeking to prepare a structural condition evaluation that will be used to make long-range decisions regarding programmatic initiatives and future use of the facility. This evaluation will establish the structural needs of the facility by prioritizing the different areas of the Fort and identifying options for repair. We will then be able to more forward in a systematic way to repair the walls thus ensuring the future safety of our visitors and preserving the historical integrity of the site. The proposed project is part of a larger Comprehensive Plan being prepared by PGAV Destinations. The first phase of the Comprehensive Plan has focused on information gathering, initial analysis and the creation of a compelling vision. Several stakeholder discussions will take place throughout the process to develop sufficient understanding of issues as a foundation for the planning. In addition, Fort Ticonderoga?s primary themes will be identified to provide the foundation for the guest experience and economic potential of the project.
