The New Museum requests funds for its expansion at 231 Bowery. Connecting to its 235 Bowery site, the $68M capital project will double the museum’s footprint, improve public circulation, and provide an additional 55K square feet for galleries, collaborative workspace, and flexible event space. The project will create a 20% increase in permanent staff (to 176), a rise in annual attendance of 500,000, and an annual economic impact of $124 million. The new building will be designed by world-renowned architects OMA / Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu, and is notable as their first public cultural project in NYC. The New Museum’s existing facilities have struggled to keep pace with its visitorship and expanded services; this architectural expansion will dramatically increase the numbers served and strategically undo some of the limitations of the current building, such as alleviating the overwhelmed circulation capacity with additional elevators.
