Upstate Films purchased and began renovations of the Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties (Ulster County) in July 2021. Phase 1 (completed Dec. 2021) included environmental remediation, roof repair, technical, safety, cosmetic and practical upgrades and a renovated lobby. We now seek funding for Phase 2, which will include renovation of the exterior (full restoration of the vintage marquee and the Main Street-facing exterior) and upgrades to Theater 3, which has the bones of a fantastic jewel-box cinema. A restored exterior (under paneling and corrugated metal since the 1980s), to its plaster, brick and glass glory, reflecting its historical significance, will be a significant draw to residents and tourists alike. Theater 3 renovations will include interior design, new wall fabrics, seats, screen and sound absorption and installation of a state-of-the-art sound system. We expect these upgrades to make the theater be a destination venue. The New York Times wrote: “If the soul of Saugerties is embodied in any building, it is the Orpheum, and we anticipate the improvements to strengthen its position as a key gathering place for locals and as a magnet for visitors.
