Rogers Island Acquisition

The proposed project is the purchase of parkland on Rogers Island in the Village of Fort Edward, Washington County, New York. The exact location of the property is south of the D& H railroad right of way that passes through Rogers Island in the Village of Fort Edward. The Town of Fort Edward and Village of Fort Edward, along with the State of New York, have worked for years together to acquire this property. The Village of Fort Edward and Town of Fort Edward are under contract to purchase a portion of the southern end of the island, and the State had entered into a contract to purchase the remainder of the southern end of the island to preserve the area for parkland. The southern end of the island is rich in historical artifacts, a burial ground, and former living quarters for soldiers. The ultimate plan for the historic area is a trail system together with informational exhibits and kiosks identifying areas of historical significance. The artifacts will be kept with the Rogers Island Visitor center.
