North Country

The North Country region of Upstate New York spans an area of 11,420 square miles from the eastern shore of Lake Ontario to the western edge of Lake Champlain and from the shared border with Canada in the north to the southern end of Hamilton County. While Watertown, Plattsburgh and Ogdensburg are the major small cities in the region, manu-facturing, farming, education and ecotourism can be found in many of the villages, towns and hamlets dotting the seven-county region.

The St. Lawrence River, a major shipping corridor to the Great Lakes states and Canadian provinces, also provides recreational opportunities for boaters, anglers and beachgoers in addition to serving as a resource for one of New York’s major hydroelectric facilities – St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project.

Proximity to the border with Canada has led many international firms seeking entry into the U.S. market to set up operations in the North Country. We are particularly proud that the North Country is home to many outstanding and internationally-known employers such as Fort Drum (Home of the 10th Mountain Division), Bombardier, Alcoa, Trudeau Institute, Nova Bus, Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), International Paper, Schonbek a division of Swarovski Lighting LTD., Crystal, and New York Air Brake. New businesses, including biotech, aerospace and advanced material manufacturing firms with established facilities in the North Country also enjoy work-ing relationships with the 10 colleges and universities and medical facilities across the northern expanse of New York state.

The six-million-acre Adirondack Park draws outdoor enthusiast, such as mountain climbers, hikers, skiers, anglers and others to the region for the many activities of-fered during the four seasons while providing a living for the many residents who live and work in the North Country. And, festivals, art exhibitions, theatre and musical performances, and many museums provide residents and visitors with numerous opportunities to enjoy cultural events without traveling great distances.
